The headline of the Jan. 15, 2001 issue of U.S. News & World Report shouts: "High-Tech Overload - Complex Gizmos are Driving Americans Nuts..." The specific article, "Overwhelmed by Tech," reveals that many Americans can't/won't move on because they still haven't figured out the devices they now have. And that typically people use only about 35% of the features in the modern equipment they buy. High-tech hardware is literally driving some crazy as they are stumbling and slipping behind while desperately trying to keep up with those passing them by.
What is "TECHNICAL LIFE COACHING"?: A "Life Coach" is basically a person who can help you resolve specific problems that you have for which you believe you need someone's help but your problems are not so serious and long enough in duration that you believe you need to actually go to a traditional service-provider over a relatively long period of time under a formal and inconvenient setting (eg: office visits), or undertake a Customized Devices (CD) progam (which we also offer, hotlink above). Life Coaching can occur in any aspect of life ranging from emotional, to financial, to legal, to medical, to technological (where we specialize). Usually, you need coaching on one or a few closely related specific problems. For Technical Life Coaching (TLC ), the problem usually entails some kind of technology decision (eg: Which computer should I buy for my ___?), how to do or operate something (eg: How do I program my VCR for recording later programs?), or some hard-to-find information you've got to have (eg: What is the penetration depths of a 3 GHz microwave signal into biological tissues?). While technical problems and needs can range from practically trivial to highly exotic and complex - we'll attempt to solve any technical problem or need using either your TLC or our CD program!
"Technical Life Coaching" (TLC) is directed towards people (and businesses) who sometime in their day-to-day lives are confronted with solving a difficult or time-consuming technical problem they don't have the knowledge, skills, experience, and/or time to solve themselves. This of course is no reflection on the capabilities in other areas. For example, a skilled surgeon may not know how to configure his computer for a new Internet service - or have the time to experiment until he gets it right. And a person's time may be far more valuable than the extra amount of time he/she needs to configure a gadget. Or are fearful of damaging the equipment or as one client told us, "messing it up even more than it is now messed up." Many technical situations, such as just described, don't even usually come with a manual. And many of the "user manuals" that do come with modern equipment and devices are not written in any understandable language (often in broken English with errors and omissions), are overly broad, and/or have critical errors, contradictions and vagueness.

Technology changes are now coming so fast that many people now have to regularly go through the seemingly interminable headache of learning a new device or system from scratch when they need it running NOW - not days or weeks from now after grueling sessions of trying to figure it out by head scratching and trial and error.
Our major purpose of our TLC service is to relieve YOU of much of the grief of learning new devices and systems by telling you what it is, what it means and what to do in as simple, common, easy-to-understand and step-by-step language as we reasonably possible can. To cut through the complexity and get down to the basics. Traditionally, Life Coaching usually occurs via email, phone or regular mail. Travel by either coach or client is seldom required, and Life Coaching almost never requires that the coach and his/her client actually physically meet (and any such meeting requires the full mutual agreement of both coach and client). Our TLC service works the same, except we don't render it by phone. The reason why we don't do phone TLCs is because some technical questions may require significant research and perhaps even experimentation by us, and we prefer to give more thoughtful, correct and comprehensive responses in a written format than impromptu verbal responses based on the coach's current knowledge. Also, even for the same answers, verbal responses usually take more of the coach's and client's time, and therefore cost the client more money. And emails can be delivered as quickly as it takes to initiate a verbal phone conversation.
SIMPLE: LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC.'s innovative TLC program
is fast and simple:
(1) You print out* this entire wepage, and read and complete this form and email (as an email attachment), or regular mail us this form with the description of your problem (if by email, you must separately mail us the non-refundable $40 Evaluation Fee). *If you have a PostScript printer driver installed, you can print this out at 75% and save several pages, here's how: File => Print => Properties => Graphics (tab) => set to 75% => OK = > OK
(2) We then email-attach, or mail (your choice) to you the cost and time estimates, which you print out in its entirety, read over and complete to obtain our TLC services.
(3) You then email (again as an attachment), or mail us this estimates contract, and send us the 1/3 nonrefundable downpayment for your project. (For fastest service, please pay by Postal Money Order, Money Transfer Service (MTS), or Trade, we must hold all checks and other M.O.s and we don't accept credit cards or CODs.)
(4) Once that is correctly done, then the coach will thoroughly analyze your problem and try to develop an effective solution for it just as fast as he/she reasonably can. If the coach is able to substantially solve your problem, he/she will then notify you of that fact, and then you provide the balance for your TLC project (again, preferably by PMO, MTS or DBX). The coach then emails or mails you the solution (if by email, it may or may not include one or more attachments). If the coach is unable to at least substantially solve your problem, he/she emails you a statement to that effect.
NOTE: Our TLC program involves only a transfer of information, and never involves the coach providing equipment, tools, parts, devices or software at all, or providing any other service (not directly related to the coach's obtaining, processing, analyzing and transmission of problem-related and solution-related data) to the client or to anyone else.
NOTE: For all email attachments, the only file extensions we will accept are PC .tif, .jpg, .gif, and .bmp (all of which modern image programs produce). We also accept .pdf files that allow printing. We do not accept .doc, .exe, .zip, .cab or any other type of files which are executable files and/or which may conceal computer viruses, or which your handwritten statements on a completed form are not clearly included in their entirety. And we don't accept email attachments not in a PC--compatible format.
Depending on level of difficulty of your problem, our fees run from about $40/hr to about $600/hr (but most rates are less than $100/hr), based on the level of difficulty we perceive in trying to solve your problem. Charges are broken up into 15-minute (quarter-hour) timing increments, and any amount of time beyond a time increment is also charged for as the next time increment. In all cases where we are unable to at least substantially solve your problem for any reason, our fee is your non-refundable 1/3 Downpayment of the estimated fee, for us making the effort. Again (as with our customized devices program), the 1/3 Downpayment as based on our original cost estimate must be received by us in advance of us substantially attempting to solve your problem (we may do some preliminary work as time permits while waiting for these funds to speed up the solution process), and if we find at least a substantial solution to your problem, your Final Charge must be received by us before we can reveal it to you. Your Final Charge is of course based on the actual hours the coach consumes in solving your problem multiplied by the stated hourly rate, plus cumulative total expenses over 5% of the charge based on the actual hours are extra (phone charges, travel, et al, if any), minus your received Downpayment. Your Total Cost is of course equal to your received Downpayment plus your Final Charge, and which may be more or less than your Total Estimated Cost provided by our cost and time estimates. Unless there has been a significant change in either the problem issues or relevant facts since the coach determined the original estimated costs, your Total Cost (minus cumulative expenses over the 5%, if any) will never exceed 125% of your Total Estimated Cost. Cumulative expenses over the 5% rarely occur, and are almost exclusively limited to foreign phone charged to us, and TLC projects which require the coach to travel to a certain location to personally view the problem or gather the facts.
Since most TLC clients usually need the solution
fairly quickly by email, and we are some times in the field, Money Transfer
Service (MTS), or Direct Bank Transfer (not implemented yet) are the much preferred
payment methods. If regular mail is OK, then U.S. or Canadian Postal Money Order
is much preferred (we don't accept credit cards, and we do not
advise checks or any other type of money order as we require 2+ weeks to clear
them first as per our GENERAL POLICIES, below).
REASONS FOR POLICIES: For those who might ask why we have so many policies. The answer is simple: Today's overly-legalistic business environment reality requires them. Period. When you buy just about anything today - product or service - it usually is accompanied by some long, detailed set of official disclaimers. The greater the variety and complexity of the products and services sold - the more disclaimers. Even contracting for a "simple" fax service these days requires a 9-page contract! Personally, we don't like them any more than you do - not as consumers ourselves and not as business people. And it is certainly not our intent for any of our policies to be viewed as unfriendly or personally insulting in any way to our good customers. We do appreciate your business. WILL REASONABLY STRIVE TO MEET OR EXCEED THE SOLUTION TO THE CLIENT'S PROBLEM (we want our clients as future TLC and/or CD clients!), LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC. DOES NOT CLAIM OR WARRANTY THAT THE END RESULT WILL BE WHAT THE CLIENT OR WE INITIALLY EXPECTED. We do not know for certain or have any control over what any TLC client will do with the information and advice we supply him/her.

WILL SEND THE CLIENT ONE OR MORE EMAILS OR LETTERS REGARDING ITS TLC SERVICE, IT HAS NO CONTROL OVER WHETHER THEY WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE CLIENT, AND WHEN AND WHAT CONDITION THEY WILL BE DELIVERED TO HIM/HER, AND IT ASSUMES NO LIABILITY AS TO WHEN, WHERE, HOW AND UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS THE COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE COACH AND CLIENT OCCURS. IF AND WHEN LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC. BECOMES AWARE OF ANY SUCH COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEM WITH A CLIENT, IT WILL ENDEAVOR TO PROMPTLY NOTIFY THE CLIENT BY EMAIL OR MAIL SO THAT THE CLIENT CAN PREVENT OR CIRCUMVENT SUCH PROBLEMS.Again, we will then do our reasonable best efforts to try to make the flow of communications between us as fast, smooth and as accurate as we can.

ANY DISCUSSION BETWEEN THE CLIENT AND THE COACH IN WHICH THE CLIENT ASSERTS A CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE OR FACT TO BE TRUE OR TO BE SUPPORTED BY HIS/HER OBSERVATIONS, DOCUMENTS and/or OTHER EVIDENCE HE/SHE MIGHT ASSERT BUT THAT THE COACH IS NOT PRIVY TO OR KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT ON A FIRST HAND BASIS, THE ALLEGED FACT WILL BE TREATED BY THE COACH IN A HYPOTHETICAL CONTEXT ONLY, AND ANY STATEMENT MADE BY THE COACH RELEVANT TO THE CLAIMED FACT WILL NOT BE AN AFFIRMATION THAT THE CLAIMED FACT IS ACTUALLY A TRUE FACT.To facilitate communications between the coach and client, and to minimize charges to the client, the coach will only question client facts or their sources only when the coach believes or knows both that the claimed facts are probably false and that they are significantly relevant to the TLC service.
ANY DISCUSSION BETWEEN THE CLIENT AND THE COACH WHICH SOUNDS LIKE TO THE COACH TO POSSIBLY INVOLVE ANY ILLEGAL MATTER, UNLESS EXPLICITLY TOLD OTHERWISE BY THE CLIENT, THE COACH SHALL ASSUME TO BE IN A TOTALLY NON-SERIOUS AND HYPOTHETICAL CONTEXT ONLY. HOWEVER, IF THE CLIENT'S INTENT IS ACTUALLY ILLEGAL IN NATURE AT ANY POINT IN THE TLC PROCESS, HE/SHE IS FULLY OBLIGATED TO MAKE HIS/HER ILLEGAL INTENT EXPLICITLY CLEAR WITH THE COACH, IN WHICH CASE LONE STAR CONSULTING, HAS THE RIGHT TO IMMEDIATELY CANCEL THE TLC AND KEEP THE 1/3 NONREFUNDABLE DOWNPAYMENT WITHOUT ANY COST OR LIABILITY TO IT TO ANYONE ELSE. LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC.cannot knowingly provide any type of illegal product or service to anyone at any time.

COST ESTIMATIONS ARE BASED UPON THE COACH'S ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM ISSUES AND FACTS THE CLIENT PROVIDES HIM/HER IN WRITING IN THE COMPLETED ORIGINAL TLCAF. IF THE CLIENT THEN REQUIRES ADDITIONAL SIGNIFICANT SERVICES, FOR EXAMPLE, BY BRINGING IN NEW OR UNKNOWN SIGNIFICANT ISSUES OR FACTS NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL TLCAF, OR ANYTHING CHANGES ANY OF THE SIGNIFICANT ISSUES OR FACTS REGARDLESS OF THE REASONS, OR UPON THE COACH'S EFFORTS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM HE/SHE DISCOVERS THAT THE PROBLEM IS MUCH GREATER, LESS OR DIFFERENT THAN ORIGINALLY BELIEVED, THEN THE ORIGINAL COST AND TIME ESTIMATES ARE NULL AND VOID, AND NEW ESTIMATES SHALL RESULT - ALL AT NO COST OR LIABILITY TO IT OR TO ANYONE. IN WHICH CASE, IF THE COACH HAS ALREADY SUBSTANTIALLY PROCEEDED WITH TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM BASED ON THE ORIGINAL STATED ISSUES AND FACTS, THEN LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC. MAY, WITHOUT COST OR LIABILITY TO IT TO ANYONE, KEEP THE 1/3 NON-REFUNDABLE DOWNPAYMENT. To minimize the client's charges, he/she from the beginning should clearly and completely define and describe to the best of his/her abilities all of the problem issues and facts known to him/her which may be involved in the coach's efforts to try to solve the client's problem.
IF THE TLC IS CANCELED FOR ANY REASON AFTER THE COACH HAS ALREADY SUBSTANTIALLY PROCEEDED WITH TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM BUT BEFORE HE/SHE HAS ACTUALLY SUBSTANTIALLY SOLVED IT, THEN LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC. KEEPS THE 1/3 NONREFUNDABLE DOWNPAYMENT, WITHOUT ANY COST OR LIABILITY TO IT TO ANYONE. IF THE TLC IS CANCELED FOR ANY REASON AFTER THE COACH HAS SUBSTANTIALLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM, THEN LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC. IS DUE THE ENTIRE AMOUNT FOR THE TLC PROJECT FROM THE CLIENT BASED ON THE ACTUAL HOURS THE COACH DEVOTES TO SOLVING THE PROBLEM TIMES THE STATED HOURLY RATE, PLUS ANY AND ALL CUMULATIVE EXPENSES IN EXCESS OF 5% OF THE ACTUAL HOURS TIMES THE RATE.Once the coach has dedicated substantial effort to gather information, make experiments (if needed), analyze it, edit out irrelevant information, make corrections, organize it, and write it up either as rough notes or as a finished response such that the information and resulting advice substantially solves the client's problem, then LONE STAR CONSULTING, INC. is clearly entitled to the full amount due.
